I received an email today from someone asking where the flags had disappeared to? For those who may have missed it, for a week or so Something Extra had a counter that displayed visitors both online and within the past 24 hours by their national flags. I thought it was fun to see that our top visitors were sometimes from the US, China, Australia, or Canada. I too remember wondering what brought visitors from Malta or Bahrain to our blog.
Although we were taking them for a trial run and had every intention of making them a permanent fixture, the flags and the (neo)counter are gone as we found that they were slowing down the time for our blog to load. The interesting thing about this exercise however is that I took some time to really see what brings visitors to Something Extra. And as it turns out, our Cross-Cultural Tips category seems to be the most popular.
Since a number of our visitors are therefore looking for cross-cultural tips and not formal intercultural training, to complement our own tips we have added a reading list of recommended books on gestures, do’s, and taboos around the world. Of course, I had to throw at least one destination book into the mix!
